DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. THE FIRST DAY’S EVENTS. COMMENT ON THE RACING. PROMINENT PERFORMERS REVIEWED (From Our Special Reporter.) Dunedin, October 12. Battlemaid's name was omitted from the list of handicap* published this morning but the mistake was promptly corrected. The southern mare will now carry 8.9 in the Clarendon Handicap. It is reported that P. T. Hogan found means to correct the stable vice contracted by Arrowy and hopes to have the Archery gelding racing again later in the current season. When the field lined up for the McLean Stakes yesterday, the Invercargill-trained fillv The Graphic behaved exceptionally well but when the cordage was released, she hesitated to watch the ascending strings. This caused her to lose her place and gallop with the rearward division over the early stages of the race. She may do better if started on Saturday. • The well known southern brood mare Mias Signal has produced a colt foal to the imported horse Shamble*. Her owner Mr. Price, intends letting the dam of Arrowy rear her colt this season without breeding from her again in the meantime. That good mare Michaela has been sent on a visit to Paper Money this season. As she ranks as the Steward*’ Handicap winner, Michaela might produce a very speedy galloper by this acknowledged early speed are. When Aspiring won the McLean Stakes, her ’ime (Imin 1 4-osecs) equalled the Wingatui track record for five furlongs, established last spring by Child*play, but the track was much faster on Thursday than at this time last year. However Aspiring won very comfortably. It thus is proved beyond doubt that she is a two-year-old of more than average merit. Her pilot in Thursday’s winning essay C. Emerson expresses the opinion that she is one of the best behaved and smartest gallopers of her age that he has ever ridden which is high praise indeed, as the Ricc art on horseman had handled many brilliant baby racehorses in his time. In the race for the Trial Stakes at Wingatui on Thursday it was noted that the Tapanui representative, On Watch, bred and owned by Dr. W. Robertson and trained by F. Shaw at the D.J.C. headquarter*. ran a good race with promise of better things to come. She had to go fast to stay on. As she is a three-year-old daugther of Night Raid from Rose Lady by Rose Noble —Red Charm, she probably will be raced at southern fixtures later on. It appears that in the Electric Handicap on Thursday. Powell on Royal Saxon lost both his stirrup irons either in the jump out or shortly afterwards. Royal Saxon who had been galloping exceptionally well on the Wingatui tracks prior to the meeting, wa* very unfortunate in meeting this mishap as he got away smartly but could not hold his good position. This was owing to his rider becoming unbalanced. The Riverton-trained three year-old filly Cetchela, who had very few friends in the Trial Stakes here on Thursday, ran a very fair race. It will not be surprising if she should develop racing ability later on. Following on *he final event at Wingatui yesterday, Sir George Clifford’s mare Childsplay was galloped over seven furlong* to key her up for her battle with Silver Paper. Goblin Market and others in the Dunedin Guineas to-morrow. She covered the distance in Imin 31 4-seecs, but her finishing effort did not impress some critics. However, she has been putting up some fast mile? at Riccarton lately. Vi*itor» from that quarter expect her to give Silver Paper a great tussle in the Guineas in which several other smart juveniles, including Starshooter, also have to he accounted for. When she got into a mix-up during the race for the Mosgiel Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday. Prickles was somewhat knocked about but at the time of writing, it is not known if her injuries are serious. Pink Note is a very warm fancy here for the Ranfurly Handicap to-morrow, with Hoylake and Set Sail also in demand. In the Wakari Hurdles Diana’s Lad will probably be elected first fancy with Red Heather keenly followed. The stable connections of Royal Saxon are of opinion that he will make amends for his mishap of the first day when the Shorts Handicap come up for decision. He will find Tripaway difficult to head off, provided she gets away. Many people here are very sweet on Rin Tin Tin but Silver Coot may account for the Riverton-trained juvenile. AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB-

SPRING MEETING OPENS TO-DAY. TRACKS ON THE DEAD SIDE. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS. (Special to the Times.) Auckland, October 4. The stage is well set for the opening tomorrow of the Spring fixture of the Auckland Trotting Club. Recent rains have not affected the track, which will be on the dead side and against fast times. The field* throughout promise to be fairly small, but the sport will be interesting. It is possible that Auckland will have a great chance of pulling off the opening event, the Waitemata Trot (11.40 a.m.) with Etta Cole, who in her recent essays, has literally been burning up the track. In a work-out last week she was tested with a more experienced horse and donkey licked him in time that would have made the handicapper open his eyes. A mile and ahalf is Bright Light's best distance and he may furnish the most opposition to Etta Cole. The well-seasoned Sunfish is given a royal chance in the Improvers’ Handicap (12.55), and so. too are Daytime and Free Advice. Of the latter pair, the former is preferred, for he is well and finishes strongly in his engagements. Despite the fact that there are only nine in the principal event, the Spring Handicap (1.5 p.m.), including Shaw’s bracket, Western King and Jewel Pointer, the contest has aroused much interest. One of the best fancied here is Jackie Audubon, while Talent appears to be coming back. Loch Moigh is a good sort and always liable to turn the trick. Then there is Dalmeny, whose form on this track in the winter was really good. "Western King and Jewel Pointer have been working in great style, especially Western King, and if he gets a dry track, he should be capable of doing big things. He certainly can turn the tables on his Addington conqueror Loch Moigh. Gold Jacket has not beeen pleasing of late. Jackie Audubon and the elect of Shaw’s pair, probably Western King, will take a lot of heading off. Up to comparatively recently we had hopes of being able to pull off the Great Northern Derby (2 o’clock) with Trustworthy, but now this one has gone back a lot. It looks as if Nicholl’s bracket, Wrackeen and Wrackler will wind up the best supported, while there may be an inclination to go for Sonoma Child. Thirteen still stand their ground and of this lot four have not yet sported silk. Seven remain in the Stewards’ Handicap (2.50 p.m.l, but King Pointer had not put in an appearance up to this morning so that there is a chance of one dividend only. Harvest Child did well when beaten by Kingscraft at Addington and that performance will result in the southerner carrying a whole lot of Auckland money. Pageant, too, has been acquitting himself in unmislakeable fashion, and of the others Fight Ever, Rose Bingen and Taipare are forward, but one comes back to Pageant and Harvest Child when making the final survey of the field. There are some good sprinters engaged in the October Handicap (3.55 p.m.l. One of the best efforts registered at Addington a couple of months ago was that by Dillon Huon. and as he is fast off the mark he should set a merry pace. The Shrew and Lady Dunmore lack nothing and behind them Jackie Audubon, Talent and Western King-Native Prince bracket should command respect. Both the latter pair will probably be allowed to take their chance and they may command more support than Dillon Huon. Nine only figure in the Mountain Trot (4.20 p.m. I. Three out of the four on the front are liable to change their gait, but Tiger Salve is solid. Maxegin can go fast, but the last bit may find a weak spot, and further back are Rose Bingen, Betty Moko, Sister Beatrice and Young Blake. Present indications point to Young Blake and Tiger Salve carrying most money. The Electric Handicap (5.10 p.m.) the concluding event, has the biggest field of the day and is a regular puzzle. William the Great and Nelson Tasker are two solid customers and perhaps they are entitled to just as much support as anything else. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. Molhson cantered at Caulfield to-day and moved freely.—Australian Press Association. INQUIRY INTO STEEPLECHASE. JOCKEYS’ RING SUSPECTED. Sydney, October 11. The stewards of the Australian Jockey Club are inquiring into the fiasco in the Dowling Steeplechase at Randwick on Saturday, when Flipbean lost his rider early, Mendia hit a fence and had to be pulled up, Clfandonia lost his rider when he appeared to be winning five furlongs from home, and at the next fence Nameerah toppled over when he had a lead of 15 lengths, leaving Grey Knight, which had been the medium of sensational backing, to win easily. The stewards are exhaustively inquiring into all the circumstances. They had previously announced that they had a suspicion that there was a jockeys’ ring among cross-country riders in Sydney. The difficulties of an inquiry are very great, but if the investigation into the Dowling Steeplechase fiasco should substantiate the suspicion, sensational developments may be expected.—Australian Press Association. JOCKEYS APPEAL FAILS. Sydney, October 12. The jockey Reg. Marsden wag unsuccessful in his appeal against two years’ disqualification.—Australian Press Association. OTAUTAU RACING CLUB. BURDEN OF TAXATION. (From Our Correspondent.) The*following remarks were made by Mr. M. O’Brien who presided at the annual meeting of the Otautau Racing Club on Wednesday evening. The members would notice that taxation was a severe drain on the club. They had paid £639 19/9, which was an unreasonable amount for a small community to contribute for one day's sport. They would have had a more profitable meeting last year had it not clashed with the Oamaru date, this accounting to a large extent for the decrease in the totalizator returns. They were greatly indebted to the Southland owners and trainers for so liberally patronizing the club. The expenditure would have to be very carefully watched, as they would have Do revenue except from the race-meeting, and they would have to carry on without any assistance from the property for the next seven years. The training track and embankment had been improved during the year. He considered the latter had justified its erection, as it had enabled patrons to obtain an excellent view of the various events. GORE RACING CLUB. HANDSOME TROPHY PRESENTED. There is at present on view in Mr. G. C. Hamilton’s window, Main Street, Gore, a silver cup valued at 50 guineas. This

beautiful trophy has been presented to the Gore Racing Club by Mr. W. James to mark his 25th year of totalisator activity with the chib. It will be presented to the winner of the chief event at next Saturday’s meeting. WINTON JOCKEY CLUB. ALTERATION IN DATES. Owing to the date of the general election ; falling on the first day of the Winton 1 Jockey Club’s meeting the committee has dow decided to race on Friday, November 16, and Saturday, the 17th. The team will leave Invercargill by cars at 12.30 p.m. HOCKEY. AUSTRALIAN TEAM. PROPOSED NEW ZEALAND TOUR. Christchurch, October 12. At a meeting of the New Zealand Hockey Association the Australian Hockey Association wrote stating that it had decided to send a team to Fiji in 1929, and that if the New Zealand Association would extend an official invitation the team would tour New Zealand either before or after the Fiji visit. A sub-committee was appointed to go into the details and to draw up a suggested itinerary and to submit estimate of the cost to affiliated associations concerned. CYCLING. APPEALS UPHELD. Christchurch, October 12. The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last evening upheld the appeals of B. W. Arnst, C. J. Deans and C. Bearman, placed men in the round Forges cycle race, against a disqualification by the Papanui Sports Club for allegedly receiving motor pace. RIFLE SHOOTING. THE AUSTRALIAN FIXTURE. (Rec. 7.45 p.m.) Sydney, October 12. Fred Harrison won the Mick Simmons Match, which is the second stage of the King’s Prize, with 97. Three others, Faux and Auburn Shearing of Sydney, and Stanley of Brisbane, also notched 97.
