ROYAL WELCOME

KING AND QUEEN AT NEWCASTLE. OPENING OF TYNE BRIDGE. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, October 10. The King and Queen left Balmoral Castle yesterday afternoon on their return to London. They reached Newcastle later in the evening and their Majesties spent the night on board the Royal train in a siding near the railway station. This morning great crowds assembled to welcome their Majesties who drove through the main thoroughfares along avenues of cheering people and were greeted at the new secondary schools, which they inspected, by 23,000 school children. Proceeding, they reached the new road bridge across the Tyne which was formally opened by raising a barrier. The Royal Standard was thereupon broken and a salute of guns fired. Church bells pealed as the King and Queen crossed the bridge and continued to drive through Great head and Durham where formal welcomes were extended to them.—British Official Wireless. INDUSTRIAL DEPRESSION. MENTION BY THE KING. Rugby, October 10. In the course of his visit to Newcastle where he opened the magnificent new road bridge over the river Tyne the King made reference to the grave industrial depression of the district in more than one speech. Replying to one address of welcpme he expressed grief that owing to dislocation of trade by the war, the industries of coal, iron, steel and shipbuilding, which had given world wide renown to the River Tyne, had been struggling with adversity. He was happy to observe that the dauntless handling of these difficulties was achieving results. Already the coal industry of the north and the shipbuilding of the Tyne appeared to be emerging from depression. He added : “The erection of the new bridge is a characteristic act of courage and demonstrates your belief in the power of these industries to recover lost trade and play again their former proper role in the world’s markets.”—British Official Wireless.
