RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

CANTERBURY COLLEGE NOMINEE. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, October 10. The Professioral Board of Canterbury College to-night decided to nominate for selection as a Rhodes Scholar Mr Philip Leonard Matthew, who is 21 years of age. He attended the Tauranga District High School and the Marist Brothers School, Auckland. In 1921 he entered the Sacred Heart College, Auckland, with a scholarship. He was dux of the school iu 1924 and 1925, in the latter year winning a Junior University Scholarship and entering Canterbury College in 1926. He was awarded the Robert Bel! scholarship of journalism at the college. He is a member of the Drane Society and gained second place at the Dialectic Society’s competitions. In 1926 he played in the second grade football team and in 1926 and 1927 was runner-up for the College swimming championship.
