DYING DOWN
POVERTY BAY FIRES. MORTALITY AMONGST STOCK. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, October 10. Though the gale continued with undiminished force throughout the night, the bush fires died down and are now confined mainly to patches of heavy logs. The settlers are endeavouring to ascertain the losses. It is known that 300 hoggets were burned on Kopua station, but it will be some days before the full extent of the damage is ascertained. Log fires commenced in the Matawai and Motu districts, but were quenched by heavy rain which fell this morning. A later report states that 1000 acres on Kopua station and 1000 on W. R. Torrit’s holdings were swept by fire yesterday, the feed having been cleaned up. Miles of fences were destroyed. The cattle came through ail right, but ewe lambs suffered badly.
