VALEDICTORY
FUNCTION AT WAIRIO. When it became known that Constable Boyle was to be transferred from Nightcaps to Lumsden, the people of Wairio thought they should in some way show Mr Boyle •the respect he was held by them, so on Monday night, October 8, a very enjoyable social was tendered to Mr Boyle in Bain’s Hall, Wairio, and despite the very rough night and other unavoidable circumstances, there was a large attendance. The chairman, Mr J. P. Forde, proposed the toast of the guest of the evening, and in doing so referred to Mr Boyle’s sterling qualities both as a constable and private citizen. He had by his tact and personality endeared himself to the whole of the district, and they were all very sorry to lose him, but, as his transfer meant a step higher up the ladder, they congratulated him on his wellearned promotion after 11 years of faithful service in the Nightcaps district. In asking Mr Boyle to accept a rug from the residents of Wairio, he assured the recipient he was leaving the district without a single enemy, and although it was a very small gift, he hoped he would accept it in the spirit in which it was given. Messrs Millar, Ballagh, Jenkins, Gordon, Grant, M. Forde, D. Robertson and N. Bates also spoke to the toast, and complimented Mr Boyle on the efficient and impartial manner in which he had always carried out his duties. Mr Boyle thanked them for their kindness and all the good things that were said about himself. Although he had had some unpleasant duties to perform at times, he had always tried to treat everybody alike, and he was very proud to know that his efforts had been appreciated, and that he had their goodwill on his leaving the district. During the evening musical items were contributed by Messrs N. Gordon, J. Finn, H. Beck, W. Dixon, S. Grant and W. S. Boyle, all of which were greatly appreciated.
