BLUFF NOTES

GIRL GUIDE COMPANY ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Bluff Girl Guide and Brownie Companies was held on Tuesday afternoon last, the president, Mrs E. A. Nichol, presiding over a good attendance. The annual report of the Brownies stated, inter alia, that the Bluff Brownies attended the guide rally held at Rugby Park, Invercargill last year. They were not fully represented on account of the inclement weather. Brownie Stedman won two races at the rally. A most enjoyable picnic was held at Ward’s Parade on November 5 and a birthday treat and farewell tea to Brownie Stedman was held the following month. It was well worthy of note to record the appreciation shown by the young folk for the generous gifts and kindnesses they received. On December 17 the first playette was presented with a view to enabling parents and friends to mark the progress made and also to receive recruits. On that occasion Commissioner Moffatt presented the first and second-class badges, service stars and special prizes. The Brownies were grateful for the invitation to attend the Presbyterian Sunday School picnic and also to the ladies’ committee for the outing accorded them at Awarua Bay. Commissioner Moffatt was suitably farewelled on March 13. Two playettes were staged later in the year to rise funds. Miss Johnstone's resignation was received during the year with regret. ’ The report was adopted. Acting-Captain D. Schofield submitted a report on the year’s work of the Girl Guides. It stated that six church parades and two rallies had been attended during the year. The attendances generally had been very irregular, due not only to sickness, but also to the inclemency of the weather. The averages had, however, gone up during the past six months. The numher of guides on the register was 20, 12 had left during the year and 7 had joined up. The following guides were leaders and seconds of the respective patrols: Canary Patrol, C. Lindsay and A. Waddell; Bantam Patrol, H. Lindquist and N. Schofield ; Orchid Patrol, E. Morrison and A. Rodgers. Lessons had been held in child nurse work (Nurse Wilson), and ambulance badge work (Dr J. Torrance), but the latter course had later to be given up temporarily. Captain Blair, of Invercargill, assisted the company for two months, and at the annual party given by the local association she was presented with a small present as a token of their thanks. Mrs C. de R. Andrews, Provincial Commissioner and Miss T. Watson, District Commissioner, were also present and the former presented the guides with their 1927 service stars and also some sewing and domestic badges. During the month of July five guides entered for the Southland test in the Lady Fergusson sewing trophy and two, C. Lindsay and M. Lindquist, were chosen to sew for Southland, which was placed third. Eight guides sat and passed for the child nurse badge, four with honours. At the guide rally the company was placed third for the efficiency cup. A parade was held on Anzac Day and wreaths were placed on the war memorial. Miss Grace Sligo was transferred to the Central Company in February and in March Miss A. M. Miller joined the Bluff Company as acting-lieuten-ant. Mi&> I. Sinclair was promoted to the jxjsition of acting-lieutenant in March also. The report was adopted. The following officers were elected for the year: Patroness, Mrs J. R. Hamilton; president, Mrs E. A. Nichol; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. B. Dixon, J. Torrance, W. H. Johnston, G. R.
