JAZZ v. DANCING.
To the Editor. Sir, —“Scotty” still continues. He silenced me at once. Oh yes! Listen, “Scotty,” I work during the week so that I can pay my way. Now you know why my letter appeared in Monday morning’s paper and none since. “Scotty,” the first letter you wrote on this subject was really a question. “Why is jazz not allowed in the dance halls in Invercargill?” No one answered you, they ignored you, and you had to keep on writing to yourself on the subject for several days. Now, “Scotty,” I took pity on you and told you why jazz (as you do it) was not allowed. I have told you once, answered your question once, and am finished unless you can prove that my answers were incorrect. You can kdep on writing “Scotty” until next dance season and still jazz will be disallowed for the very sane reason I gave you before—dances are not run here (or anywhere else) unless there is a chance of paying expenses. Would you run your business, “Scotty,” on lines that would keep the majority of people out of your shop. Your non de plume, “Scotty,” leads one to believe not. Who is writing under an assumed name? —everyone but “Scotty.” He is not. Now throw all the nice bouquets you have thrown to others, who write under a pen name, in your own face, “Scotty,” and also tell the public you did not know who “Oatmeal” was. The two you have chosen to represent the “jazz fiends,” “Scotty,” should do well. Which one is to take the ladies’ part ? Will he be dressed as such? Now, “Scotty,” I am finished until you prove my answers to your first letters. —Why is jazzing not allowed, etc.?—wrong.—l am, etc., DANCER. [The correspondence is ended.—Ed S.T.]
