AWARD REPUDIATED
AUSTRALIAN WATERSIDERS. Melbourne, September 8. Delegates representative of all branches of the Australian Waterside Federation in special conference agreed almost unanimously to repudiate entirely Judge Beeby’s new award which they described as pernicious and vicious. It was decided further that the watersiders should withdraw from the Arbitration Court and adopt the principle of direct negotiation with the employers and the utilization of economic powers for the enforcement of demands. Particular objection was directed at the clause in the award which insists that members of the Federation should in the majority of the ports seek work for the whole period of eight hours daily, whereas the custom had been to offer for engagement on an average of only two hours daily. The delegates decided to seek a conference with the shipowners upon the subject of wages and conditions generally.—Australian Press Association.
