DESIRE TO FORGET

WAR REMINDERS TO BE SCRAPPED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, September 8. England’s desire to forget the war is becoming apparent in a new sphere. Several councils recently ordered the removal or destruction of captured German guns and tanks which up to a year ago were proudly exhibited in parks or elsewhere. The Mayor of Southwark is at present pushing the campaign and is further seeking the views of his brother mayors throughout London favouring the removal of such trophies. The Daily Express editorially urges the immediate scrapping of the unlovely instruments of war littering England’s parks, parades and seaside promenades. The grim, hideous and inhuman exhibits speak only of war and ruthless slaughter. As trophies of victory they are valueless and cause pain to those trying to forget the realities. They are keeping alive the war idea while sane people are striving desperately to ensure peace.—Australian Press Association.
