Messrs Bray Bros., Ltd., report as follows for week ending 14/7/28: Fruit and Vegetables.—Fairly heavy supplies of dessert apples reached this market during the week, and prices eased slightly. Large cookers are still in short supply, with a keen demand. Dessert pears are in good demand, and choice lines are eagerly sought after. Our market is now cleared of inferior grade fruit, and better prices are anticipated. Mandarins, oranges, Poorman and Seville, lemons, etc., are arriving ex Karetu, and will be available for Tuesday’s sale. The first direct South Island shipment of Samoan bananas ex Maui Pomare, is due about Wednesday. Island oranges and New Zealand lemons will also be available. Pumpkins, marrows, parsnips and carrots are plentiful with a poor demand. Kumaras will be available at the beginning of the week. Seed potatoes are now coming on the market and we have full supplies of Jersey Bennie, Black Kidney, Robin Adair, Sutton’s Early Perfection and W T hite Elephant. Hay, straw, bran, pollard, wheat and oafs have had a good sale. Oatdust is in short supply, but we expect full supplies early next week. Current prices for the week are as follows:—Table potatoes £5 10/- to £7 per ton; seed potatoes according to variety and sample; chaff £4 10/- to £6; inferior lines 2/6 to 3/6 per bag; wheat 22/6 to 25/per bag; oats 16/- bag; oat dust 6/6, to arrive; pollard 17/6 bag; bran 9/- bag. Fruit.—The market is very lightly supplied with oranges, the only stocks being Californian Valencias. Sydney fruits are due on Monday by the Karetu, and the first shipment of Samoan bananas ex the Maui Pomare should reach Invercargill early this week. Apples still continue in full supply. Pears are short and realizing better values as follows:—Apples from 4/- to 10/- per case, according to variety; pears, good samples to 6/- per box; Island oranges to 20/- case; ripe bananas to 30/- per case. Vegetables.—Cauliflowers 5/- to 9/- per dozen; cabbage 2/- to 3/6 dozen; carrots, tables 6/- to 8/- per cwt; jam melons to 2d per lb; parsnips 14/- cwt. General.—Mutton-birds 9d to lOd per bird, according to counts, special quotations for large quantities; macrocarpa and pinus insignis trees, 2 years old, 18/- to 25/- per 100; fencing wire 20/6; barb-wire 27/6; Exchange tea 13/6 per 51b box; galvanized tanks £3 15/- to £5 10/- each; wheelbarrows 25/- to 35/- each. Furniture.—We are having a special display of superior Wilton and Axminster carpets and these are being sacrificed at very low prices to clear. Other attractions offering in this department are bedroom suites at £l5 to £2O; beds complete from £4 15/■to £5 10/-; blankets 35/- per pair upwards; beds £2 15/- to £4; pillows 5/- each; Pabcolin squares £2 10/- to £2 15/-; linoleum from 6/- to 8/- per yard. On Thursday we held a most successful sale in Mary street, there was a full attendance of buyers and bidding was brisk throughout. F. BOWDEN AND CO. Messrs F. Bowden and Co., report heavy supplies of potatoes during the week, but as good sales are being made stocks continue on the light side and consignments, are wanted. Produce of all descriptions is selling well. There are good stocks of hay, straw, chaff, oats, wheat, bran, pollard, oatdust, barley, ryecorn, sucrosine and molasses on hand. But flowers are now reaching our market regularly. Cabbage have a much better inquiry, whilst cauliflowers are k short of requirements. Supplies of carrots

and parsnips are about equal to demand. Horse and cow covers are selling well. Fencing wire is also meeting with a ready sale. The fruit market is well supplied, apples being plentiful, although supplies are easing off and prices are much firmer. A fair quantity of pears is coming to hand, but prices for these have firmed considerably during the week. Fresh shipments of bananas, Island oranges, navels, mandarins and Seville oranges should be to hand for next Tuesday’s sale. Good supplies of Poormans are on hand.
