RETURNS FROM CHRISTCHURCH (Per United Press Association.l Christchurch, June 30. A decrease of £125,875 is shown in the Customs revenue collected at Christchurch for the half year ended June 30. Beer duty shows a decrease £5031. The drop in customs is the effect of reduced imports. For the half year of 1928, customs duties totalled £475,155 as against 1927 £601,031 Boor duty amounted to £38,907 as against £48,939 for 1927. For the June quarter of 1928, customs duties totalled £223,752 as against £308,238. Beer duty, £20,487 as against £21,503. For the month of June, customs totalled £75,577 compared with £146,624. Beer dutv £6.123 as against £5»837. Motor spirit tax since it was imposed in February yielded £26,339. DECREASE AT WELLINGTON. A big decrease in the customs revenue collected at the port of Wellington during June of this year is seen when the figures are compared with those for the month of June of last year. There is also a slight decrease in the beer duty collected. Customs duties for June, 1927, totalled £305,216 10/2 and for June, 1928, £168,254 1/10. Beer duty £4,122 15/5 for June, 1927, as compared with £3,947 14/-. The figures for the six months ending June 30, 1928, compared with those of a similar period for last year are: Customs duties (1927). £3,182,819; (19281 £3,066.363. Beer duty (1927) £65,620; (1928) £64,924. Although the customs duty collected is slightly less than the average for ihis time of the year, June of last year, however, proved to be an exceptional month on account of the large quantity of spirits cleared in anticipation of the change in tariff.
