OTARA NOTES

WINTRY WEATHER CONDITIONS. (From Our Correspondent.) The weather during the past two weeks has been of a very wintry nature. Very few frosts have been so far. After a week of cold east winds and rain veering to the south heavy rain fell, culminating in a fall of snow on the evening of the 29th. Fortunately it did not lie long, being washed away again. The ground is now soaking wet and all streams are running bank high. Rain fell on 12 days, the total being 2.85 inches for the month. Work on the farms is at a standstill at present, being too wet for ploughing. Quite a lot of top-dressing is being extensively used. STOCK. Mostly all stock are in very good condition ; winter feed is fairly plentiful here. If the winter is not too severe there should be ample to carry stock through till the spring. The local dairy factory closed down for the season on June 15 after a very successful season, being an increase of 17 tons. The balance of the season’s output was sold to Weddell and Co. at 9|d per lb. Messrs Burns Bros, of Wyndham showed pictures in the public hall on the 26th. Unfortunately the weather was on its worst behaviour, but a large crowd turned out. The hall committee ran an extended dance after the pictures in aid of the hall funds. On Monday, July 2, a draughts match is to be played in the hall, Glenham Club having challenged Otara and surrounding districts. Mr Cullen, sole teacher, leaves here on June 30 to take up his duties at the South School. Miss Violet McColman is relieving until the board makes an appointment.
