AMALGA MATED AREA

QUESTION OF DRAINAGE. TELEGRAM TO MINISTER OF HEALTH. The following telegram was sent on Wednesday to the Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young), Wellington, by his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) : “Understand the Board of Health is meeting to-day. Would strongly urge the necessity of authorizing a loan for drainage and water for the amalgamated area of Invercargill.” MINISTER’S REPLY. The reply received by the Mayor reads as follows:—“Your telegram urging the Board of Health to issue a requisition on the Invercargill Borough Council to proceed with the raising of a loan for certain drainage and water works received. The board went thoroughly into the several matters relative thereto, including the sufficiency of septic tanks to carry the extra work which the drainage of 400 additional houses would impose, and decided to send Dr Watt, deputy Director-General of Health, to Invercargill to make a full inquiry into the sanitarv situation with instructions to report to a committee of the Board of Health, consisting of the chairman and Messrs C. M. Luke and F. W. Maclean, who will have power to act on receipt of Dr Watt’s report. Dr Watt hopes to be able to proceed to Invercargill in about 14 days, but will advise you definitely.— (Signed) J. A. Young.”
