THE RAILWAYS

LINE FROM ROTORUA TO TAUPO. (Per United Frees Association.) Wellington, June 28. The Government has decided to extend the railway line from Rotorua to Taupo. The Prime Minister states that he has been guided in the decision by the necessity for opening up further areas of Crown land by experience with fertilizers on land of second and third-class and by the results of research work. A further consideration is that in about five years the Forestry Department will require transportation for their timber. Two commissions have reported in favour of rail, but the question of the road was also considered and again the balance was in favour of the rail. The work will be put in hand at once and a number of men transferred from the East Coast line.
