ONE-ARMED DRIVERS

NO LICENSES IN CHRISTCHURCH. (Per United Press Association.) •Christchurch, June 28. One result of the new motor regulations is that no more licenses will be issued in future by the Christchurch City Council to one-armed drivers.

There are one-armed drivers in Christchurch who have held licenses for years, but the City Council officers consider that the regulation prohibiting a driver from removing both hands from the wheel of a moving vehicle or taking one hand from the wheel except when the vehicle is under full control, makes the case of a one-armed driver impossible. The matter was referred by the City Council to the Department, which upheld the council’s decision not to grant licenses. The reply of the Department states also that in the event of an applicant having one sound arm and one artificial arm, the question would then hinge upon the efficiency of the latter and would appear to be a matter for the council’s discretion.
