RIVERTON NOTES

CRIBBAGE MATCH. (From Our Correspondent.) The return match between Riverton and Thornbury was played at the junction on Tuesday evening, when a pleasant time was spent, the following being the scores:— T. R. Adams and Jones v. Milligan and Hayles 0 9 Brown and Valli v. Hymers and T. Molloy 5 4 P. and A. Molloy v. Eade and Trembath 5 4 Foster and Hamilton v. Stevens and Stirling 5 4 Munro and Miller v. McLean and J. ' Stirling 5 4 Haywood and Edie v. Rouse and Anderton 5 4 Totals 25 29 W.E.A. At the weekly meeting an interesting address was given by Miss Hansen, a young lady who is visiting Southland, In the course of her remarks she stated that Denmark contained an area about the same size as Southland, with a population of 3A million. The chief industry was dairying, and large quantities of cheese and butter were exported to England. Compared with the holdings here the farms were small, but intensive cultivation was carried out. Referring ,to education she said in the higher schools English, French and German were taught as a large amount of business was transacted with these countries. Miss Hansen also delighted her audience by singing a number of songs, and was heartily thanked for providing an enjoyable evening’s entertainment. ANGLICAN CHURCH.

A meeting of ladies of the above was held in the vicarage to complete arrangements for the approaching cafe chantant, when the following appointments were made:— Work stall—Mesdames Jordon, Gordon, Dickson, E. Trail; cake and sweets, Mrs Trotter, Misses O. Trotter and A. Banks; produce, Mesdames Hancock, Davis, and Miss Robertson; tea rooms, Mesdames McLean senr., Martin, Ladbrook, Misses Bole and Cowie; Christmas tree, etc., Mesdames McLean, jnr., Me Ivor, A. McKay and Griffiths; decorations, Mrs Jordan and Miss Rena Berndtson. The vicar announced that two laughable farces would be given on the night of the bazaar. THE WELFARE SOCIETY.

The above society—a recently formed one—has done an immense amount of good to the more unfortunate residents in town and district, and the executive are to be commended for their efforts in alleviating distress. The lack of employment has been responsible for a number being so hardly pressed, and the society has promptly come to assistance and made provision in the more necessitous cases. The Rev. F. O. Prosser has arranged a concert for this (Friday) evening, the whole of the proceeds going to the funds, and it is to be hoped residents will give their wholehearted support for apart from hearing a first class musical programme, they will be helping on a few families who have experienced a hard time of late.
