THE MINIATURE RIFLE

OPENING SHOOT OF THE NEW CLUB. On Wednesday evening after the formal opening of the new local miniature club the majority of the 49 shootists present took part in the shooting on the new range which they found quite satisfactory. The Invercargill and Mataura Defence Rifle Clubs had a match with eight men aside five counting shots being fired by each marksmen. The result was a draw—l 46 points each out of a possible of 200 which shows that these men have yet to master the intricacies of miniature work. Lieutenant J. A. Munro with his second possible for the day was the top scorer his first possible being secured with the .303 rifle on the Otatara range earlier in the afternoon. It appears that the club will soon be strongly established although there are several matters requiring attention, namely, the erection of more targets, the drafting of teams and the erection of a shelter for the markers in addition to the appointment of one or two office-bearers, including in particular an executive range officer who would cope with, inter alia, the habit of some marksmen in having much more than their fair share of shooting. The following are the results of the match between the Invercargill and the Mataura Defence Clubs:—

MATAURA. J. A. Munro 25 R. Barclay 24 C. Goodwin 20 B. V. Ross 19 A. L. Ross 18 A. M. Robertson 16 F. Munro 12 E. Johnstone 12 Total 146 INVERCARGILL. J. Ure 24 D. A. R. Wills 23 R. Ure 22 W. Milley 20 W. S. Ayson 19 M. Sheehan 17 M. Summers 13 F. Fredric 8 Total 146 The following are some of the leading scores of marksmen not in the above teams:— G. H. Smith 22 L. Nesbit 19 J. Morrison 18 J. Harvey 16 J. Darling 16 W. O’Brien 16 A. Thompson 13 F. Alexander 11

Next Wednesday evening a general meeting of the club will be held and several matters still in abeyance will receive attention. It is intended to have a ladies’ team former! at an early date so the attendance of ladies next Wednesday evening is particularly desired.
