OTAUTAU NOTES

MEN’S HOCKEY. (From Our Correspondent.) At the meeting of the Western District Ladies’ Hockey Association on Monday evening a suggestion was made that a men s hockey association be formed. Delegates present spoke in favour of the proposal, and it is evident that a good deal of support would be forthcoming should a mOVe in that direction take concrete form. RIVER IMPROVEMENTS. The dredge which is working in the new channel of the Otautau river is making good progress, and a good deal of gravel is being deposited on the banks. The River Board is going to take a poll of the ratepayers shortly to raise a special loan of £3,550 for carrying out the necessary work on the Otautau and Opio streams. This work, if completed, will lessen the danger of floods in the township. SOUTHLAND STOCK FOR AUSTRALIA. Mr W. Kennedy, “Studleigh,” Otautau, the well-known sheep-breeder, shipped 100 Border Leicester ram hoggets per s.s. Taratu to an Australian buyer on Tuesday. The sheep have been passed for export by the Government inspector and, the Sheep-owners’ Association. OBITUARY. Residents will regret to learn of the demise of Mrs Henderson on Sunday at Blenheim. The deceased lady was the daughter of Mr and Mrs James Dickson, and married Mr John Henderson of the Defence Force some years ago. Mrs Henderson was an Otautau girl, and was educated at the local school. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the husband and family in their loss.
