BLUFF NOTES

CIVIC CARNIVAL. FORTHCOMING EVENTS. (From Our Correspondent.) Strong committees have been at work at Bluff ever since the proposal to hold a Civic Carnival was finalized and already the secretaries of the various princesses have a fair sum each in hand. The chairman and secretaries of the committees and the princesses are given in that order as follows: —Citizens, the Mayor, Dr. J. Torrance, Mr H. W. Newman and Miss Dorothy Dixon; Sports, Mr James Fletcher, Mr D. Parry and Miss Betty Bradshaw; Railway and Watersiders, Mr J. Cameron, Mr T. Henley and Miss Mavis Wares. The citizens committee is conducting a street stall and a sale of parcels, the Sports Committee concerts and a basketball match between the Bluff team and the footballers and the Railway and Watersiders a street stall and concerts.

The carnival is being conducted to provide funds for the building of a new pavilion on the sports ground and the furnishing of the new Town Hall. Fifty per cent, of the proceeds of the Princess Carnival goes to the former end and if there is any money left over it is to be spent on improving the grounds. The balance of the money from the carnival goes to the furnishing of the Town Hall together with the money collected at the bazaar to be conducted on the opening day of the hall on August 20 and lasting until August 25. Voting for the Princesses closes at midnight on the 25th and on the 27th it is proproposed to hold a crowning ceremony for the successful princess and a social and general wind-up of the carnival and bazaar.

Subsidiary events are: —July 9, a con cert to be given by the North Invercargill Hall concert party; July 14, fancy dress football match; July 23, travellers’ concert party in the Drill Hall. Apparatus has been procured from the St. Kilda Beach Improvement. Society—the same as was in such popular demand at the Exhibition and it is expected to arrive any day. A miniature chocolate alley will be erected, the prizes having been already procured locally by the committee.

In conjunction with the carnival and bazaar there are many side attractions notably a baby vote competition and side shows, a tug-of-war competition starting on the Wednesday and completing on the Saturday. On August 22 there will be the arrival of Captain Cook, the function being on lines similar to the May Fair gala. The captain will be met by a party of Maoris in national costume who will escort him to Argyle Park where races and a variety of entertainment will be provided.

Flags in the colours of the various princesses will be flown to-morrow night probably on Mr E. A. Nichol’s buildings showing the position of the princesses. These will be changed, if necessary, every week as the money comes in.
