MAIN HIGHWAYS

CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS. SCHEMES APPROVED BY BOARD. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 25 At the monthly meeting of the Main Highways Board on May 21 and 22, one of the most important matters dealt with was the question of construction of highpavements adjacent to the larger centres of population on the introduction of the petrol tax. It was indicated that approximately 25 per cent, of the amount collected would be utilized for the payment of a preferential subsidy to counties for the purpose of construction of high-class pavements on heavily trafficked roads adjacent to the larger centres of population. The cost of constructing such high-class roads was falling very heavily on some of the rural dis tricts and the Board in cases of this kind now pays subsidies up to £3 for £l. Several tentative schemes were approved by the board and these in accordance with previous announcements are now being submitted to the District Highway Councils and Automobile Associations concerned in each case for consideration. The schedules which have been drawn up cover periods ranging from 4 to 7 years based on the estimated amount which will be available from the petrol tax.
