MARINE JOTTINGS GREY RIVER BAR. Finality as to the choice of means for the removal of the edit bank at the Grey River Bar was reached recently when the Greymouth Harbour Board at its special meeting, decided unanimously to accept the plan submitted by Mr R. T. Stewart, of Dunedin. The chairman (Mr Steer) said he had carefully gone into the plans

and it seemed to him that the scheme submitted by Mr Stewart was the best. Continuing, he said that the plant was in Dunedin already constructed and waiting to give a demonstration there. Mr Stewart declared that his plant would be in work ing order three weeks after the Board had made up its mind. Captain Cox, who had also designed a device, stated that his scheme was not to meet a situation such as had at present arisen. Strictly speaking the appliance was not big enough to deal with the present emergency. In his opinion only a flood would clear the bar, or a scheme such as that submitted by Mr Stewart. It was explained that Mr Stewart’s scheme required 480 to 500 horse-power, to work the pump, which would discharge two hundred thousand gallons of water per minute against a head of 300 feet of water. There would be two nozzles, enclosed in a submerged steel cylinder, a branch pipe from which up to the atmosphere above the surface admitted air. The pressure in the cylinder induced the air to circulate round the jets of water as a sleeve, and this sleeve prevented the jets from mixing with the water through which they were projected against the material to be removed. The air sleeve was projected into the material, causing it to rise and dissipate in the current. TELEGRAPHED REPORTS. COASTAL AND OVERSEAS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, June 26.
