LADIES’ HOCKEY

MEETING OF SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD AT TIMARU. The fortnightly meeting of the Southland Ladies’ Hockey Association was held last evening, Mr P. Gilfedder presiding. The following members were present:—Misses C. McGregor, E. Melvin M. Woods, L. Fraser, Bishop, A. Blomfield, G. Gilfedder, E. Buchanan and Mr R. J. Surgenor. The most important communication was to the effect that the New Zealand tournament had been allocated to Timaru. In connection with this, the initial steps were taken towards the sending away of the team when Mr R. J. Surgenor was appointed manager with power to make all general arrangements regarding the tour. A donation of one guinea from Mr D. Donaldson, of Invercargill, was received, the secretary being instructed to write conveying the thanks of the Association. The Collegiate team sent a cheque for £lO, with the proviso that if no other town team sent in its £lO, the donation should be counted as votes for their princess. This amount had been asked for some time ago from every town club. It was finally decided that, as an amendment to the motion that asked for £lO from the country clubs, the words, “The money to be used as votes for the clubs’ respective princesses,” be added. The secretary of the Drummond Club wrote advising that Miss Grace Clark had been appointed the Drummond princess. —Received.

A letter was received from the Southern Association asking that a match be arranged between the two Associations.—lt was decided that the match be played on Saturday, July 14. Mr Surgenor moved and it was carries, that all secretaries of clubs send him a list of players whom they considered of representative form so that he could pick a team that would be approximately the Southland team and see them all in action. He stated that it was his intention, however, to form a slightly weaker team than for the tournaments so that it would not be at all a true indication of the final choice.

It was decided that next Saturday’s matches should commence at 2.45 on account of the »seven-a-side tournament which would precede them. Mr P. Gilfedder moved that Mr R. J Surgenor be given a free hand in arranging the match between the sub-Associations in preparation for the tournament on condition that he gave two days’ notice to enable ordinary fixtures to be postponed. DENIAL OF ALLEGATIONS. Mr P. Gilfeder then rose to take strong exception to a statement apparently made by the Western District Association which was reported to have instructed its secretary “to draw the attention of the Southland Association to the fact that a considerable amount of money was sent in from various sources in the Western District last year, but this was not acknowledged by the members of the parent body.” He absolutely denied that any money sent in from the Western District Association had not been acknowledged. Only a little money had been sent in and this he had personally acknowledged as well as sending a statement of all receipts and expenditure to every club in the Western District. He would like to know just what their meaning was by that statement. Mr R. J. Surgenor corroborated Mr Gilfedder’s remarks on the acknowledgement of what money had been received. He felt sure some mistake had been made in the reporting of the discussion and that the statements had really been published in ignorance. However, t he moved that Mr Gilfedder write to the Association and ask them what was meant by the assertion. This motion was carried unanimously.
