WINTON NOTES

FOOTBALL. WINTON v. WAIANIWA. (From Our Correspondent.) The Winton senior fifteen motored to Waianiwa on Saturday afternoon to play Waianiwa. It was a miserable day, although the rain cleared during the play. The ground was in a very bad state, pools of water lying all over the playing area. The Winton backs played good football, Souness, Bell and Anderson being outstanding. In the forwards Arthur Watson, Crane and Boyle were prominent. For Waianiwa, Galt and Brown played sterling football in the forwards, Gray and McKenzie being outstanding in the backs. For Winton, Bell scored a brilliant try, running from halfway. Anderson made no mistake with the kick, which was a very good one considering the frightful state of the ground. J. Brown scored a good try for Waianiwa, but the kick failed to increase the score. It was a hard game, good football being witnessed under adverse conditions, and ehded in Winton's favour by five points (one try converted) to three (one try unconverted). Mr W. Moylan ably controlled the game. JUNIORS. RYAL BUSH v. WINTON. This game was played at Winton last Saturday. Winton kicked off. Play hovered round the Ry al Bush 25 and good line kicking by Bruce relieved and play ranged up and down the field for some time. Ryal Bush took the ball into Winton’s 25, where mishandling by the Winton backs allowed Ryal Bush to get away, but the effort ended in a force down for Winton. From a smart kick off O’Brien (Winton) secured and a score resulted. The kick failed. The half-time whistle blew with the scores: Winton 3; Ryal Bush nil. Ryal Bush started off with a rush and soon showed that their weight was too much for the Winton boys, who began to tire. Ryal Bush took advantage of this and soon rattled up eleven points. The score ended in Ryal Bush’s favour by eleven to three. THE WEATHER.

Dunng the week the weather has been very rough and stormy, with heavy showers. The mountains round about are covered with snow and when the wind blows across the valley it is extremely cold. THE COMPETITIONS.

The local vocalists, elocutionists, etc., are busy preparing for the Winton competitions, which have been well organized by a splendid committee and everything points to a very successful festival.
