Major R. A. Row, N.Z.S.C., was a passenger to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon.

Mr R. Savage, architect for the Education Department, is at present on a visit to Invercargill on Departmental business. Mr A. Ibbotson, general manager of the Perpetual Trustees Company, arrived in In. vercargill by the mid-day express yesterday. Mr A. C. Carman, borough electrical engineer, who has been attending the recent engineer’s conference at Wellington, returned to Invercargill yesterday.

After spending a holiday in the month, Mr G. I). Lishman, the local tourist officer, returned to Invercargill by yesterday morning’s express.

Miss Dyer, inspectress of domestic science subjects, and Mr F. C. Renyard, inspector of manual training and Technical College work, are at present on a visit to Invercargill.

Mr L. B. Hutton, chief engineer of the Southland Electric Power Board who has been attending an engineers’ conference at Wellington, returned to Invercargill by the express yesterday morning.

Messrs Ward (representative of Forest Service) And Seed (secretary of the Dominion Federation of Sawmillers) arrived in Invercargill by the express yesterday morning.

The many friends of Mr H. O. Haggitt, who some weeks ago had the misfortune to be knocked down by a motor car, will be glad to learn that he is able to resume work.

On Friday afternoon at Gore Mr W. D. Shelton was presented with a cheque for a substantial amount as a wedding present from the members of the Gore Stock Agents’ Association. Mr J. Perry, president of the association, making the presentation, spoke of the good work done by Mr Shelton in his capacity as secretary of the association, and on behalf of the members wished Mr Shelton and his future wife every success. Mr Gee and other members also add ed a few words, and Mr Shelton briefly returned thanks.

Another district old identity passed away at Invercargill on Sunday morning in the person of Mr John France, of Mandeville road, Gore, at the advanced age of 84 years. The late Mr France was a native of Ava, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and arrived in the colony in 1856, settling at Milton. He married at Milton, and in 1884 he came to Gore and took up a farm on the Mandeville road, adjoining that of Mr Hans Morrison, and now occupied by Mr H. E. Bacon. Mr France retired from farming pursuits about nine years ago. Mr France was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the choir for many years. He had been in poor health for some years. He leaves two sons —Arthur and Campbell—and three daughters—Mesdames McKenzie and McArthur, of Gore, and Miss France (Milton).
