MINISTERIAL. The Hon. K. S. Williams, Minister of Public Works, arrived in Stratford yesterday afternoon after travelling through from Taumarunui and inspecting work on the Stratford main trunk railway. He met various deputations and was sympathetic to the local view that the work should be expedited, consistent with the economy of working. He left later for Wanganui.— Press Association message.

Mr G. A. Bishop, Dunedin, is at present visiting Invercargill. Mr J. C. Braithwaite, 8.A., of Port Chalmers, who has been appointed an assistant at the Southland Boys’ High School, has taken up his duties. He is well-known in athletic circles in Dunedin, and was emergency for the Otago provincial rowing fours. Mr A. E. Fastier, who has held the position of accountant of the local branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., for the past four years, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the head office, Wellington. Mr T. R. Abercrombie, of the local office, has been appointed to fill the position vacated by Mr Fastier. Mr D. Little, who has been accountant in the National Bank of New Zealand at Riverton for the past four years has been promoted to a similar position at Gore. During his stay in Riverton, Mr Little took an active interest in sporting matters, being connected with the Football, Tennis, Bowling and Golf Clubs. He will be succeeded by Mr A. Dooley, Christchurch. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Dominion Herdtesting Federation at Palmerston North: — President, Mr Dynes Fulton (Hamilton) ; Management Committee, Messrs G. H. Bell (Taranaki), J. Parlane (Canterbury), P. Hill (Northern Wairoa), G. R. Herron (Southland), J. A. Stratford (Southern Hawkes Bay) and C. M. Bardsley (Bulls, Horowhenua).

Appreciative reference was made at the annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation to the valuable work which had been done by Mr D. Miller, now of the Cawthron Institute, and Mr R. Waters, formerly Government biologist, in research in connection with the growing and cool storage of fruit. It was decided to ask the Government to appoint an officer in place of Mr Miller, and to carry on the important research work in connection with the more efficient cool storage of fruit on land and sea, which had been conducted by Mr Waters.

On Friday afternoon last Miss Monaghan, assistant in the Lochiel school, was farewelled by the School Committee and parents, prior to taking up a similar position at Limehills. Mr McKerchar (chairman), said they all very much regretted Miss Monaghan’s departure from the school, in which she had done such excellent service and where she had not only won the love of the children, but the esteem of the parents, i Mr Robb endorsed Mr McKerchar’s remarks On behalf of the pupils and parents the headmaster, Mr S. M. Allott, presented Miss Monaghan with a handsome travelling rug, and expressed his warm appreciation of her work in the school. Miss Monaghan suitably replied. Miss V.
