MINISTERIAL. The Hon. O. J. Hawken will leave Invercargill this morning for Edendale, where it is understood he will attend the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Edendale I)airy Factory.

A cablegram from London states that Roy Kilner, the cricketer, left an estate valued at £1699.

His Honour Mr Justice Sim and his associate, Mr B. C. Haggitt, expect to return to Dunedin by this afternoon’s express. Confirmation of Mr C. L. Grange’s appointment as Town Clerk to the Invercargill Borough Council was recorded at last evening’s council meeting. Mr G. A. Lee, of Auckland, who has at the request of the Bluff Harbour Board agreed to submit a report on the provision of further facilities for shipping at the port, is expected to arrive about the middle of June.

James Standring, whose death at Dunedin was announced on Monday was a Lancashire man who came to Lyttelton in 1880, a.nd had as his first Presbyterian charge in New Zealand the extensive parish of Waiareka. He was subsequently stationed at Middlemarch and Alexandra and retired about six vears ago to live at Warrington. His final illness lasted about seven months.

Major W. B. O’Toole, Commissioner Southland Boy Scouts, has received advice that? Brigadier-General A. W. Andrew, Hon. Dominion Chief Commissioner, will arrive in Invercargill next Monday, May 21, and will visit troops as follows:—Monday afternoon, Bluff; Tuesday, Orepuki, Riverton, Otautau, and if time permits, Winton; Wednesday evening, meet officers and committees of the Invercargill District. The General will leave for the north on Thursday morning.

Private advice has been received by Mr R. A. Adams, of Bluff, of the death of his father, Mr H. H. Adams, of Takapuna, Auckland, at the age of 77 years. The late Mr Adams has been connected with the goldmining industry for over 61 years in the Thames district. He was a member of the Auckland Harbour Board for many years and was also a member of the Waitemata County Council. He was associated with most of the big mining ventures in the Thames Peninsula. He was born in Auckland and has spent his life in New Zealand. He leaves a family of six sons and one daughter.

A very pleasant function took place at Glencoe on Friday in Mr D. Macdonald’s barn, the occasion being a farewell social and presentation to Miss C. Hamilton, who has been teaching in the local school for over two years, and is now transferred to a school in the Waimate district. Mr A. McKay, chairman of the School Committee, made the presentation of a case of stainless cutlery, making reference to the sterling qualities of Miss Hamilton as a school teacher. Messrs Birss, A. Macdonald and J. Mackintosh endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks. The guest thanked all those present for the gift and kind remarks, which she very much appreciated.

Mr Russell Elliott Chester, 8.A., Lond., A.R.A.M., the Associated Board R.A.M. and R.C.M.’s examiner this year who will conduct practical examinations in New Zealand, was born in Winnipeg, Canada He received his musical education in Brussels, and won the first prize of the Brussels Conservatoire in 1914. He continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he became first a sub-professor in 1918, obtaining several prizes for composition and elocution, and later in 1926 was appointed one of- the professors of pianoforte. Amongst other appointments held by Mr Chester is that of Lecturer in Appreciation of Music for the London County Council, and he is also honorary secretary of the Music Teachers’ Association.
