FAREWELL SOCIAL
AT WAIKAKA VALLEY. LOCAL RESIDENTS HONOURED. A large gathering assembled at “Strathmore,” Waikaka Valley, on Tuesday evening, May 1, to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs J. H. Whitefield prior to their departure from the district. Visitors were present from Gore, Waikoikoi, Merino Downs, Pukerau and all the surrounding districts. The evening was spent in dancing and musical items. Songs were contributed by the following: Mrs H. Smith, Miss M. Whitefield, Messrs D. Reid, Shanks and Patterson, while recitations were given by Miss C. Day, Messrs Nicholson and J. Cunningham, and a hornpipe by Mr L. Healey was much appreciated, bagpipe music for this being supplied by Mr R. Smillie. The accompaniments were played by Mrs T. McPhail and Miss V. Whitefield. At a suitable interval Mr J. Dynes in a few well-chosen remarks referred to the many fine qualities of Mr and Mrs Whitefield. Bettej neighbours, he was sure, could not be found anywhere. He then asked Mrs Whitefield to accept a handsome afternoon tea service in Bond ware and a case of stainless cutlery. To Mr Whitefield he presented a smoker’s cabinet and a case of razors. Messrs J. E. White, H. Smith, R. Cummings, T. McPhail, J. Howden, I. Dripps, D. Reid, IL Mclntyre, W. Lietze and W. Waddell endorsed the remarks of the chairman, and Mr Whitefield feelingly replied. The music for the dance was supplied by Messrs Ritchie and Walker, extras being played by Mr R. Smillie. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close.
