BOWING

ROWING EIGHTS. WIN FOR CANTERBURY. OTAGO A GOOD SECOND. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, March 24. The inter-provincial eights rowing race was rowed on the Koro Koro course on Wellington Harbour parallel to the Hutt Road this afternoon. Large crowds watched from the shore. A fairly stiff northerly blew all day but dropped a good deal during the afternoon. The course being sheltered from the north, the water was fairly smooth. The boats started with Canterbury (inside), Wanganui (2), Auckland (3), Marlborough (4) and Otago (outside), and went northwards for a distance of three miles. The results are:—Canterbury, F. H. Brown (stroke), G. Duggan (7), S, P. Godfrey (6), Q. S. Morris (5), O. A. Styles (4), N. Gk Styles (3), W. L. Whittington (2), F. G. O’Born (bow), A. Eastwood (cox) 1, Otago 2, Marlborough 3. Time, 14 minutes 17 seconds. All the crews started, with the exception of Wellington who began the day with bad luck, for just as they were bringing their boat to the Petone beach they struck a wpoden pile. The boats took an exceptionally long time to get into position. All the crews got away with gun and it was not long before Canterbury began to draw out from the line. For the first quarter of a mile there was little to pick and choose between any of the crews. Towards the half mile mark Canterbury pulled a little further ahead and Otago crept away from the others until they were about a length and a half behind Canterbury. Marlborough was last at this point. Otago then drew up on Canterbury and crossed over from outside. Here Marlborough beat Wanganui for third place. Half a mile from home Otago drew to within half a length of Canterbury but a good spurt by the Canterbury men increased their lead a trifle and the finishing point was passed by the Canterbury men threequarters of a length ahead of Otago. Third place was taken by Marlborough, a* much greater distance back while Wanganui came in fourth and Auckland last. The Canterbury men were well spaced and rowed beautifully the stroke throughout the race scarcely varying from start to finish. Otago did well but towards the finish lacked good combination.

FOR OLYMPIC GAMES. NEW ZEALANDERS SELECTED. Wellington, March 24. The oarsmen picked to represent the Dominion at the Olympic Games are the following:—H. F. McLean (Wellington), C. S. Morris (Canterbury), F. H. Brown (Canterbury), C. A. Healey (Wanganui), F. Brough (Otago), V. Olsson (Marlborough), L. Brooker (Auckland), C. A. Styles (Canterbury), G. St. Clair (Auckland), G. Duggan (Canterbury). Reserves: H. G. Styles (Canterbury) and N. Webber (Auckland). Messrs A. D. Bayfield and E. S. Innes (Wellington), H. Ayres (Canterbury), A. M. Hale (Marlborough) and W. Sharpe (Wanganui) were the selectors. After the interprovincial “eights” were rowed on Saturday two crews were picked for the Possibles and the Probables race over one mile and a-quarter. They were:— Possibles (No. 1 position) : C. A. Healey, Wanganui (stroke), L. Brooker, Auckland (7), F. Brough, Otago (6), C. S. Morris, Canterbury (5), C. A. Styles, Canterbury (4), G. St. Clair, Auckland (3), F. H. Brown, Canterbury (2), C. W. McAra, Otago (bow). Probables (No. 2 position) : W. Gibbons, Marlborough (stroke), G. Duggan, Canterbury (7), E. F. Hegglun, Marlborough 6), H. F. McLean, Wellington (5), S. P. Godfrey, Canterbury (4), B. Sandos, Auckland (3), J. C. Braithwaite, Otago (2), H. G. Styles, Canterbury (bow). From a good start the Possibles soon took, the lead. After the crews had settled down the Possibles were still slightly in the lead and after rowing for a-quarter of a mile they were a canvas ahead. After half a mile the positions were the same. The Possibles sprinted near the finish and amidst great excitement they came in first with the Probables barely three-quarters of a length behind.
