SAWMILL WORKERS

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

The monthly executive meeting of Sawmill Workers’ Union was held in the Labour Hall, Esk street, on Saturday. Mr James Chalmers occupied the chair and there was a fair attendance of members. A communication was received from Mr E. Parlane, secretary New Zealand Timber Workers’ Federation, forwarding claims that had been filed for a sawmillers’ Dominion award, and stating the case had been set down for hearing on February 13 in Christchurch.—The secretary was appointed one of the assessors to appear on behalf of the federation. A communication was received from Mr Roberts, secretary, New Zealand Alliance of Labour, stating that a conference had been called by the Trades and Labour Council Federation and the Alliance of Labour for the purpose of discussing the proposed amendments to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and to decide upon what line of action would be taken when a conference of employers and workers is called by the Government.—lt was decided to be represented at the conference through the New Zealand Workers’ Federation.

The secretary reported that during the month he was negotiating four compensation cases for members amounting to £B5O. Two cases had been satisfactorily settled and the remaining two were still undergoing negotiations.

The secretary reported visiting sawmills at Tokanui, Waikawa, Haldane and Tahakopa. Five new members were enrolled and £lO5 received in members’ contributions.
