QUEENSTOWN NOTES
THE WEATHER. (From Our Correspondent.) The drought broke early yesterday when light rain fell during the night. It was showery almost up to mid-day and a great amount of good was done in the town and district. Strange to say, the barometer was high at the time of the break. It has a tendency to fall now and there is at present every appearance of more rain. LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL. At the ordinary meeting of the Lake County Council last week it was decided in acordance with the Shops and Offices Act to fix Wednesday as the statutory closing day. It was resolved that all eating houses be registered under the Health Regulations at an annual fee of 10/-. An application by the Big Beach Gold Mining Company for a grant of £lOO toward completion of the road to Sugar Loaf claim was recommended to the Mines Department. It was decided that the county horse team be sold forthwith in the district; failing this, that they be sent to Invercargill and disposed of there. GENERAL. There has been a falling off in the number of visitors during the last week, though the accommodation places are still busy. There will, however, be a clearing out by the end of this week as several families will be returning home to be in readiness for taking up school again. Mr W. Mclnnes has just completed the purchase of Mr Lyle’s property on the Eastern Terrace. The property embraces eight sections with and 8 or 10 roomed residence. St. Peter’s Church held a produce and cake sale in the Town Hall on Saturday last. The sale was well patronised by visitors as well as local people. Nearly £l4 was raised. The members of the Main Highways Board arrive in Queenstown on Friday and meet the Lake County Council in the afternoon. The 15th annual meeting of delegates to the Southern District Fire Brigades’ SubAssociation will be held in Queenstown on March 17,
