WAIKAKA SPORTS. GOOD COMPETITION. In dull but very warm weather, and before a large and representative attendance, the annual athletic sports took place at Waikaka on Wednesday afternoon. District runners were present in goodly numbers, and in the greater number of items Gore performers were to the fore, chief among whom were A. Davidson and J. G. Sim, who found places in nearly every event for which they were entered. The gate takings amounted to £32 11/5, a decrease of £1 19/7 in comparison with last year, while takings from various other sources were very satisfactory. The secretary, Mr J. Rankin,, under canvas, had a very warm hour or two, and at any period he was ever ready to start. The following were the results:— 100 Yards Maiden: W. Stewart 1, R. Graham 2, L. Perriam 3. Won by two yards. Five starters. No time was taken. 75 Yards Flying Handicap.—First heat: A. Davidson (scr) 1, W. Stewart (syds) 2. Time, 7 4-ssecs. Second heat: J. Sim (2yds) 1, 1. D. McKenzie (4yds) 2. Time, Bsecs. Final: I. D. McKenzie 1, J. G. Sim 2. Time, 7 4-ssecs. A close finish, the judges having a hard job to separate the winners. Davidson came up fast and took third place. Nine entries. Waikaka Handicap, 135 Yards.—First heat: A. Davidson (3yds) 1, J. G. Sim (6yds) 2. Time, 14secs. Second heat: I. D. McKenzie (9yds) 1, J. Gimmell (10yds) 2, B. Munyard (Byds) 3. Time, 14 l-ssecs. Final: A. Davidson 1, J. G. Sim 2, I. D. McKenzie 3. All rose to an even start. Nearing the tape Davidson was pushing Sim very close, with McKenzie handy. Davidson got up to breast the tape with hardly a perceptible distance separating him from Sim. McKenzie was a yard back third. Time, 13 2-ssecs. Fourteen entries.
