TREE FELLING IN ROME

GANG’S ASTONISHING CRIME. A strange gang of criminals entered Rome at night some weeks back and perpetrated a deed w’orthy of the Goths and Vandals of 1300 years ago. They cut down 50 beautiful sycamore trees on the most fashionable part of the Via Veneto, from the former Dowager-Queen’s Palace to the Pincio Gate. These trees were planted about 60 years ago, and some of them towered to the roofs of the houses. They were one of the principal ornaments of Rome. The sight created horror and surprise in the morning. The work of felling the trees was done by the gang between midnight and 6 a.m. It was feared that some night the same band might attempt to level the Colosseum to the ground, or damage some other famous monument.
