BOWLS

WESTERN DISTRICT PAIRS. HELD UNDER FAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS. (From Our Correspondent.) Yesterday the seaside clubs had a busy time when the pairs competition was played. There was a large attendance of followers of the game, and a number of visitors from the Eastern District, who were holding their annual picnic, helped to considerably' augment the number of spectators. The heavy rain of the previous days fortunately ceased, although the early morning, with a falling glass, did not promise well, but as the day progressed the mist cleared and the tournament was carried out under good conditions —although at times somewhat humid. The visitors from the district clubs thoroughly enjoyed the outing, and the greens were in the pink of condition. The management of the tournament was in capable hands, and no fault could be found with the arrangements. Refreshments were supplied by the home clubs on the south green. Mesdames George Merrie and A. Gilchrist, assisted by Messrs G. Merrie and J. Church, were in charge, while Mesdames J. Crawford and A. Provan and assistants superintended on the Aparima green. Following are the results: RIVERTON GREEN. —First Round.— A. Evans and S. Bailey (Riverton) 12 v. Joyce and King (Aparima) 7. Willett and Webb (Riverton) 12 v. Black and Bulman (Apayma) 9.
