ANNUAL PICNIC HELD. A DAY AT CROYDON. The break-up of the Waipounamu School and the giving of the prizes to the children was celebrated by holding a picnic in conjunction with the Sunday school, the com bined picnic taking place at Croydon Bush on Saturday, when, favoured by fine wea ther, there was a large attendance. The committee organised' a sports meeting, the following being the winners in the various events —Children under 6 years—Valerie and Donald Clark (tie) 1, W’hinfrey Clark 3. Boys under 9—Russell Watt 1, Arnold Tayles 2, John Tayles 3. Girls to Standard ll.—Nellie Korrell 1, Jean Tayles 2, Effie Elder 3. Boys to St. lll.—Keith Elder 1, Ernie Mortimer 2, Lloyd Elder 3. Boys, 14 and under—A. Mortimer 1, Keith Elder 2, Ben Watt 3. Girls, St. 11. and up— Effie Elder 1, Joyce Watt 2, Nellie Horrell 3. Young Ladies’ Race—Florence Watt 1, Effie Horrell 2, Bessie Watt 3. Threelegged Race—Annie and Nellie Horrell 1, Keith Elder and Ben Watt 2, Florrie Watt and Ruby Horrell 3. Young Ladies’ and Men’s Three-legged Race—A. McAllen and Mattie Elder 1, Ronald Elder and Bessie Watt 2, Telfer Elder and Mavis Tayles .. Young Ladies’ and Men’s Race —Florrie Watt 1, Miss C. Atkinson 2, Miss E. Mortimer .. Ladies’ Walking Race—Mrs Atkinson 1, Mrs W. Mortimer sen, 2, Mrs F. Tayles 3. Married Men’s Race—E. Horrell 1, G. Horrell 2, J. Elder 3. Small Children —Whinfrey- Clark 1, John Tayles 2, Jean Tayles 3. All the children were presented with a prize, and the following also gained special prizes in their respective classes at school— P. 4, Edna Elder; St. 1., Russell Watt; St. IL, Effie Elder; St. 111,, Arnold Tayles: St. V.. Keith Elder; St. VI, Lloyd Elder. All the Sunday school children were also presented with a nice prize. At the close of the picnic Mr James Elder complimented the teacher on the splendid way she had brought the children out during the year, and the committee members (who were all present) on the interest taken in school matters, special mention being made of the secretary, Mr John Clark, who has had 20 years’ continuous service as secretary. The Sunday school teachers, Mrs A. McAllen and Mr James Elder, jun, received a special vote of thanks for the ihterest taken in the little children. Mrs McAllen presented the prizes, which she has generoulsy donated for the annual break-up since the Sunday school started at Waipounamu.
