ARAPUNI STRIKE

WORK RESUMED. OVERTIME CLAIM CONCEDED. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, June 18. Work was resumed at Arapuni at 7.30 a.m. to-day, following an agreement reached last flight, and normal conditions are again ruling. The trouble now appears to be definitely settled. The settlement was reached after an hour’s conference and was entirely unexpected by the majority of the camp. Actually the employers conceded the overtime claim involving a sum of 4/9, but never refused to do so before the strike was set in motion. The employers took the stand because the calling of a strike was unconstitutional and contrary to the workers’ agreement made in 1925. j Mr P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, and Mr T. O. Bishop, representative of the Employers’ Federation, waited at Arapuni and assisted to bring the parties together. It may be said that the men’s representai tives admitted that the interpretation of the overtime clause by the company had been right. It had not been properly de- . fined however and after discussion the ! company’s representatives agreed to accept the definition of the terms of the clause in the Builders’ and Contractors’ Labourers’ i Award (Northern Industrial District) I which allows double time for work done I between midnight and 6 a.m. if a workman has already worked during the day, and time and a-half for work done between 6 a.m. and the ordinary time of starting
