SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED. Entries for Wellington Winter meeting to-night. Serious totalisator decrease at Napier Park races. Auckland Trotting Club Winter races close on Wednesday. Melbourne and Caulfield Cup weights on Monday next. Alan McDonald rode at Napier Park races on Saturday. Wellington R.C. first day handicaps are due on Monday next. Margaret Birney is working well again on Riccarton tracks. Radiac is to race over Ashburton and Trentham fences. W. J. Bowden may ride Kawini in the G.N. Steeplechase race. J. Henderson may race Final McKinney at Auckland on Wednesday. Courante (dam of flying Valicare) visits Heroic during the season. His owner hopes to qualify Peterwah (4.31) for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Beau Cavalier was not injured w’hen he fell in the Winter Steeplechase. Wallace Young trained Crown Coin on the Wanganui Jockey Club tracks. A West Australian buyer has been endeavouring to purchase the speedy Rascal. The totalisator is being opposed in England, as the starting-barrier was in years gone by. It was at the Napier Park R.C.’s Autumn meeting that Peneus put A. McDonald out of court. Mr W. T. Hazlett’s gelding, Beacon Light, is in steady work on Napier Park R.C. tracks. North Islanders favour Zircon as a very likely candidate for the Wellington Steeplechase. As Peter Moko is to travel Southland this season it is interesting to note that his daughter Betty Moko won at Auckland. It is very interesting to note that <he pacer Imprint has come back, and it is to be hoped that his N.Z. Cup entry will be in order this year. As a result of the Auckland Racing Club’s recent Winter meeting the Government has benefited to the extent of £17,609 19/- by way of taxation. Mr M. Wells, owner of the horse Memsahib, who was the cause of trouble at the A.R.C. meeting, denies that he has sold the equine referred to. Stan Davidson, the crack Sydney apprentice horseman, who was expected to top the century, has succeeded, as he has won over 100 races this season. It is reported from Christchurch that George Reed, who has been engaged as a journalist for some time past, is applying for a trainer’s license in Christchurch. His first pupil will be the steeplechaser King Abbey. Terence Dillon, the leading light harness winner at the Auckland T.C.’s meeting on Saturday, opened his account as a three-year-old last season when he won the Invercargill Handicap (14m.) and the New River Handicap (2m.1, the two harness events of the Southland R.C.’s Autumn meeting of last season. He is raced by his breeder, Mr P. McCarthy and was sired by Author Dillon from Teresita, by Marvin Wilkes (imp.)—Young McKinney (imp.) mare. His success in Auckland will be well received in South Island trotting circles, as he is trained by J. Henderson, of Oamaru, who is well and favourably known to followers of the American sport. The North Otago mentor has been wonderfully successful with light harness performers descended from Young McKinney. A Sydney cable message, dated June 18, states that the totalisator turnover for the Randwick racing season just ended was £1,129,000 a decrease of £30,000 below the previous year, although there was one more racing day. The man who compiled the fategoing message has evidently failed to take into account the fact that the A.J.C.’s Autumn meeting was postponed and interrupted by rain, floods, and wild storms and this fact to a very great extent must have accounted for the drop of £30,000 in the turnover at A.J.C. headquarters. Clarus, who was beaten into third place in the Flying Handicap at the Canterbury Park races in Sydney on Saturday, is identical with the three-year-old Auckland-own-ed gelding of that name, a son of Lucullus— Llanberis. Private advice from Auckland is to the effect that he is a hack performer of more than average merit, hence he may yet make good in Sydney. When the pair were training and racing as hurdlers last season Maunga and Crown Coin w’ere both strongly selected as prospective steeplechasers and Crown Coin was the second of the pair to make good on Saturday—Maunga previously won the Wanganui Steeplechase. When Birkenella raced badly at the Dunedin J.C. Winter meeting in the hands of P. Mcßrearty disparaging remarks were made by those who should have known better as to the horsemanship of the Wellington jockey. The unjust critics will note that Mcßrearty rode a great race on Hokioi in the Petone Hack Steeplechase at Napier Park on Saturday and won by a head. Mcßrearty, as a matter of fact, has won many flat races, hurdles events, and crosscountry contests and ranks as a very capable horseman where jumping jockeys and experienced trainers are gathered together. Right here I should like to apologise to Pilliewinkie (writes ‘‘Cardigan” in the Australasian). When I saw the old fellow looking as well as a two-year-old I felt ashamed because in writing about the weight-for-age horses for the coming spring meetings recently I did not have the courtesy to mention Pillie’s name. Pilliewinkie might, for all we know, prove the thorn in the sides of Limerick, Amounis, Pantheon, and Co. He has done well since returning from his spell, and it is quite likely that he will stand another preparation. He certainly appears sound enough, and the tendon that he struck in, the Herbert Power Stakes that day that he ran so badly seems normal again. On being questioned as to Agrion’s prospects in the forthcoming Australian J.C. Derby his veteran mentor expressed himself to a Sun writer as follows:—‘Though I do not think he is a typical Derby colt, I expect him to run a big race at Randwick. The colt will receive the full penalty in the Chelmsford Stakes, and unless he is in top form he will not be a starter, for it would be useless knocking him about.” Items of interest published in Australian papers in regard to the Derby are as follow’:—Mr Frank Curzon, the owner of Call Boy, has been ill for some time, and though still indisposed, watched the race throughout. He was overcome with excitement all the time. After the race he went to the course, pale and trembling, to lead in the winner. As he did so he said, emotionally, “It’s too good to be true.” Friends, supporting him, assisted him to return. Mr Curzon was given a chair in the stewards’ room to enable him to recover before going to receive the King’s felicitations. . . . The filly Stampede, who was purchased by the Dowager Marchioness of Queensberry four days before the race, started at a fourfigure quotation, which is a record long price for a Derby candidate. She toiled

along behind the rest of the field and fin- I ished a quarter of a mile last. The Marchioness, who had not seen the filly before the race, said afterwards, “I never want to see the animal again.’’ . . . The day provided the most severe test the betting tax officials have had since the new Act came into force. They daily received a record payment of tax.

A large increase in the number of entries ! received for eight classic events on the ; Auckland Racing Club’s programme for next season is announced as follows, the previous year's entries being quoted in parenthesis:—Welcome Stakes 136 (93), Royal Stakes 184 (167), G.N. Foal Stakes 179 (144), G.N. Champagne Stakes 195 (162), G.N. Guineas 210 (178), G.N. Derbv 238 (222), G.N. Oaks 129 (105), G.N. St. Leger 206 (214). The entries total 1476, as compared with 1285 last year, an increase of 191. A feature of the nominations is the number of Australian-bred horses that figure as entrants. NAPIER PARK RACING CLUB.
