ABOUT PEOPLE

Mr C. B. Tapley was a passenger by yesterday afternoon’s express. Mr T. Snow, of Wellington, returned to the north on yesterday afternoon’s express. Mr William A. Hislop, representing Universal films, arrived in Invercargill last evening. Judge Gilfedder arrived by the afternoon express yesterday to preside over a sitting of the Native Land Court on Tuesday. Mr T. Pound, chairman of the Southland section, left for Wellington yesterday morning to attend the annual conference of the New Zealand Public Service Association. Prior to his marriage, Mr *W. Rea was the recipient of a case of cutlery from the firm of Thomson and Co., and a silver tea and coffee service from his fellow employees. The following appreciative reference to the late Hon. D. H. Guthrie was made in the report of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, which was presented at the annual meeting in Wellington recently:—“The representatives of the N.Z.R.S.A. met the late Mr Guthrie on scores of occasions and although their requests were not always acceded to the kindly and sympathetic hearings accorded by the Minister greatly assisted the interviews; it was always known that the representations made would be carefully and conscientiously considered. In his death the ex-soldiers have lost another friend and the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, on their behalf, extended deepest sympathy to Mrs Guthrie and her family.”
