TUATAPERE NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The members of the Waiau Welfare Society paid a surprise visit to Mrs Curow’s residence on Tuesday afternoon in order to bid farewell to Mrs Duschnitz who leaves Tuatapere at the end of the month. A very pleasant hour or two was spent with conversation and competitions. Mrs C. Duncan, president of the society, then addressed Mrs Duschnitz, expressing the regret of the members that owing to ill-health her stay in Tuatapere had been curtailed. Mrs Duncan wished her a pleasant voyage to Melbourne, and later a safe return to her home in Vienna. As a token of remembrance from the Welfare Society the president handed Mrs Duschnitz a suede tea cosy with Maori scene in poker work. To Mrs Curow, who is accompanying her sister to Melbourne, Mrs Duncan presented a cream and sugar at the same time expressing the hope that she would have a very pleasant holiday. Mrs Duschnitz in reply said she regretted very much that the state of her health necessitated her leaving New Zealand months earlier than she had intended. In Tuatapere she had made many friends and had been received very kindly by all. She would treasure the gift and long remember the givers. Mrs Curow also thanked the friends for their gift to her sister and also herself. She hoped later to be able again to assist with the work of the Welfare Society which had always been for public benefit and the welfare of the district. Those present were Mesdames Duncan, Lippett, Mangan, Mazengarb, Lawrie, Lobb, McCulloch, Stancomb and Stoneman and apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Nicholas, Benneworth and W. Glendinning. FOOTBALL. A friendly game between Tuatapere school boys and Clifden school team was played on the domain last week. The local boys proved victors by over forty points. BIRCHWOOD HUNT. The Birchwood Hunt Club held a meeting on Messrs Ford’s property at Te Tua on Wednesday last. Ideal weather attracted many onlookers and a very successful day was the result. Afternoon tea was kindly supplied and dispensed by Mrs B. Brookes and Miss Ford. After many frosts and fine days rain cdhimenced to fall early on Friday. This was welcomed by many for strange though it may appear, those who depend on the rainfall for water supply were becoming anxious, only a few inches being left in some of the tanks, and this at Tuatapere in mid-winter. Some of the older residents express the opinion that the last spell of frost extended over a longer period than any for many years.
