NATIONAL HAIRY SHOW

GOOD WEATHER CONTINUES. LARGE ATTENDANCE FOR THIRD DAY. (Per United Press Association.) Palmerston North, June 16. At the third day of the National Dairy Show, the weather was fine but dull. There was another large attendance. The chief Rugby event was Wellington Training College versus Maori Agricultural College. ADDRESS BY PREMIER. Palmerston North, June 16. Visitors to the National Dairy Show today included the Prime Minister and the Hon. O. J. Hawken, who were the guests of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association at a smoke concert this evening. In response to the toast of his own health, proposed by Sir Douglas Mac Lean, Mr Coates spoke on the necessity for greater effort on the Dominion’s part to assist the ‘Mother Country in naval defence. He was sure all would recognise that anything done to assist the Motherland with defence was the surest way to maintain the peace of the world. He would not say, however, that New Zealand was not willing to assist to bring about the peace of the world, but until that peace was brought about, we did not want to be caught napping. Mr Coates referred to Britain’s gigantic task of post-war construction; re-arranging the economic and industrial system, and paying war debts. It was New Zealand’s duty to do our little bit to help her. Eightynine per cent, of the Dominion’s exports were purchased by Britain, and it was up to us to buy nothing but British goods and thus put them in a better position to buy more of our exports. Referring to the unemployed, Mr Coates said the Government was doing what they thought reasonable, but it was not their intention to take the whole responsibility for the unemployed in the Dominion. The Premier also touched briefly on the transport problem, and indicated the necessity for further taxation on road use to lift the burden of upkeep of the highways from the shoulders of the taxpayers. He also referred to the establishment of the Agricultural College at Palmerston North, which would greatly benefit the primary producer.
