Major W. Bell was a passenger by the inward express yesterday. Mr W. G. Hay was a passenger by the express for Dunedin yesterday. Mr W. K. Andrew. Judge’s associate, left for the north by the express yesterday afternoon.

Mr Justice Reed returned north by the afternoon express yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs Reed. Mr G. F. Myers left for Christchurch by the express yesterday. Dr Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, has arrived in Rome much benefited in health. After paying a visit to Ireland, the bishop will return to Auckland about August. Mr W. F. O’Donnell, first assistant master at the Waipukurau District High School and secretary of the Waipukurau A. and P. Society, has been appointed secretary to the Auckland A. and P. The resignation of Mr B. B. Swinborn, assistant engineer to the Christchurch Drainage Board, was accepted with regret at a meeting of the board on Tuesday. Mr Swinborn has been appointed assistant engineer to the Invercargill Town Council. Lieutenant-Colonel B. C. Freyberg, V.C., who has acted as the representative of the New Zealand Council on the Royal LifeSaving Society in London, has resigned this position, as he is unable to attend the meetings of the Central Executive, on account of his many other duties. The election of further representatives to the Council of Education is announced as follows— Mr F. Milner, Miss N. E. Coad, representing respectively men and women, secondary and technical teachers. Mr J. E. Purchase was elected as representative of South Island public school certificated men teachers. —Press Association.

A Hokitika telegram states that the death took place at mid-day yesterday of Henry Arnold Thompson, a well-known monumental mason and undertaker, after a short illness. Deceased was 53 years of age and leaves a widow and family of six. He was deputy superintendent of the Fire Brigade, president of the Bowling Club, and deputy starter for the Westland Racing Club and held many other public positions.

Sir James Allen stated to-day that the following delegates had been appointed to attend the conference at Honolulu of the Institute of Pacific Relations:—Dr. P. Buck and Mr W. H. Cocker (Auckland) ; Messrs W. Nash (Wellington) and J. E. Strachan, M.A. (Canterbury). Neither Sir James Allen nor Dr. G. 11. Scholefield could go. It was quite impossible for Sir G. Richardson, Administrator .of Samoa, who was also invited to go.—Wellington Press Association telegram.

The New Zealand Council of Education has now been brought up to its full strength of 17. The annual meeting has been called for June 8. The personnel of the council is—Messrs T. B.
