UNRETICULATED RATEPAYERS’ IMPOSITION. MAGISTRATE HAS NO OPTION. “The nearest pole is one and a-half miles away. We have had no light, and we’re paying for what we aren’t getting,” protested a farmer ratepayer in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when defending a judgment action by the Southland County Council for the recovery of rates owing. The plea was of no avail. “It is very unfortunate for you,” said his Worship (Mr G. Cruickshank). “The rate’s been struck all over Southland, and it’s got to be paid. You have the satisfaction of paying for your neighbours. I am very sorry, but I’ll have to give judgment for plaintiff. Next case, please.” A sympathetic Magistrate, but not very satisfying to those ratepayers who are still without electric light and have to pay the rate for same.
