NATIVE TREES AND PLANTS.
To the Editor. Sir, —Mr. J. B. Thomson’s very cogent idea, regarding the establishment of a Native section somewhere in our parks or gardens, must appeal to many citizens who have the progress of our town at heart. Possibly it is because we of an older generation have been so familiar with the “bush” that at one time was so plentiful in the vicinity of the town, that we have failed to establish such a representative collection as Mr. Thomson suggests—a collection that should interest overseas visiters as well as our own rising generation. Specimens of native trees and shrubs, to be seen growing in suburban gardens, prove what can be done in the way of cultivating our indigenous flora. A very large selection of native plants, grown under artificial or nursery conditions, is available in several nurseries in the north, and it is to be hoped that our new curator will receive every encouragement to carry out Mr Thomson’s suggestion. —I am, etc., “KOWHAI.”
