Mr R. Hudson, of Dunedin, is at present visiting Invercargill. Mr N. Conradi (Dunedin) is at present visiting Invercargill. Mr W. F. James (Dunedin) arrived in Invercargill by car yesterday afternoon.

Lieut-Colonel N. W. B. B. Thoms, D. 5.0., M.C., and Major P. H. Bell, D. 5.0., arrived at Invercargill by the mid-day express yesterday.

At. the meeting of the Southland Presbytery yesterday the Rev. J. Chisholm was nominated as Moderator of the Otago and Southland Synod for the ensuing period. The Rev. J. Chisholm was appointed to the combined position of secretary and treasurer of the Presbytery of Southland yesterday, vice the Rev. W. J. Robertson, resigned.

A Press Association cable from Suva states that H.M.S. Diomede sailed on Monday for Vila, the Governor, Sir Eyre Hutson and General Sir George Richardson being passengers.

Mr A. Bain (Mayor of Invercargill) leaves for Wellington by the first express this morning for the purpose of attending the quarterly executive meeting of the Dominion Municipal Association. The following members of the Gore Borough Council have definitely signified their intention of seeking re-election at the .forthcoming elections—Messrs J. Brownlie, A. T. Newman and W. K. Hamilton.

Mr R. Graham, who .has occupied the position of accountant to Lewis’s Ltd., for the past four years leaves to-day for Waimate where he has been appointed to a similar position with the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-op.

At the annual meeting of the Southland Indies’ Hockey Association last evening, the secretary was instructed to write to Mrs H. Ashley, expressing the sympathy of the association with her in her illness, and hope for her speedy recovery.

Very Rev. Father O’Donnell, who recently assumed charge of the Invercargill parish, in succession to the late Very Rev. Monsignori Burke, has been appointed by the Bishop, Vicar-General of the diocese, which carries with it the title of Monsignor.

Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon, the representative of the combined district of the boroughs of Gore, Mataura, Tapanui and the town districts of Wyndham and Edendale on the Southland Electric Power Board, in response to numerous requests, has decided to contest the seat again at the coming election. Yesterday members of the mechanical, clerical and reportorial staffs of the Southland Times met under the chairmanship of the manager (Mr R. J. Gilmour) for the purpose of congratulating two fellow-work-ers, Messrs K. Mills and G. Hope, on their recent marriages, and to present them with tangible tokens of the esteem and regard in which they are held. In handing over a cheque to each of the guests, Mr Gilmour voiced the best wishes of the Times staff for their future happmess and prosperity, and on his call, three cheers were given for the recipients. Both suitably acknowledged the presentation. Miss Duncan, who had been cm the staff at the Gore Post Office for 12 years, was on Monday evening met by the other members of the staff on the eve of her departure for Linwood, where, she will take charge as postmistress. She was presented with a toilet set and other articles by Mr I. I. McGregor (Postmaster), who referred in eulogistic vein to the capable and efficient manner in which Miss Duncan had at all times performed her duties, and he expressed regret that she was going. At the same time, however, he congratulated her on her promotion, and wished her every success in her new sphere. Several others also referred to Miss Duncan’s faithful service, and complimented her on her well-merited promotion. Later in the evening Mr D. L. Poppelwell (Mayor of Gore), with a deputation of business men, waited on Miss Duncan at her residence and presented to her a gold wristlet watch as a token of appreciation for the courtesy and attention they had always received in the transaction of business. Still another presentation was made to the departing official when a surprise party of some 30 ladies visited Miss Duncan at the residence of Mr Carmody. A very happy time was spent in song and music, and Miss Duncan was presented by Mrs Poppelwell with a pearl necklace. Miss Duncan left Gore yesterday morning by the early express.
