Hair Waving

If you are one of the luckless ones whose hair never will stay waved, you must start to give your head a regular course of treatment even' night and morning. Don’t if you are one of the straighthaired, wave your hair with irons. The continual use of waving irons tends to make the hair harsh, and harsh hair never will gain a natural-looking wave. Instead of irons, invest in a couple of sets of water-waving combs, such as can be bought at any haberdasher’s or hairdresser’s, a tail comb, with fine teeth, and a length of veiling long enough to twist round the head. Besides these, you will need a bottle of bav rum.

Every night pour a little of the bay rum into a saucer, and, dipping the comb into it, comb the hair through from the roots upwards. This is to allow the air to circulate through the hair. When the head feels cool and fresh start combing in the natural way, pinching waves up all over the head. Twist the length of veiling over the head, fasten it at the nape of the neck with a small hairpin, and go over the head once more, pinching in the waves more firmly still. Leave for the night. In the morning remove the veiling, but not till after your bath, and pass a comb through the waves, pressing it down firmly in each “kink.”

This process must be repeated every night, care being taken to arrange the waves in exactly the same position. It is a good plan before putting on a very close-fitting hat to fix a few “invisible” hairpins in the waves to keep them in position, especially during the first few weeks of training the hair, as this prevents the hat form disarranging the “set.” No matter how straight the hair to be treated, if this plan is persevered with a “kink” is bound to show in time, but it is essential that the waves shall be set in exactly the same position every night.
