THE TAR-SEALING OF WINTON’S MAIN STREET.

To the Editor. Sir, —I have been greatly interested in the correspondence going on in your paper re garding above. Quite a lot of comment has been passed on the work and the way it is being carried out. The want of knowledge is clearly shown, neither method nor economy has been used. What I have noticed is the tar has been taken from the barrel and poured on to the road surface. Why did not the council make inquiries from other public bodies, about the best method of applying the tar? In my day (which may be an old-fashioned time) I have always seen tar heated before applying and the result was always good and a larger surface covered per barrel. This tar sealing is only a new method of road dressing and I doubt if there is anyone who can really say it will be permanent. For myself I cannot call it permanent work, as it will be an annual business to re-tar and keep the life in what has already been done. The expense of re-dressing, each year will be a heavy expense on the ratepayers. I noticed by the report in our local paper, that at the last meeting of the borough council, there was quite a heated argument over this tar-sealing. Unfortunately the report of this meeting has been so pruned down, one is left wondering what really did take place.—l am, etc., ONLOOKER*
