MAGISTRATE’S COURT

SITTING AT GORE. (From Our Correspondent.) At a sitting of the Gore Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., presided. ON LICENSED PREMISES. F. L. Giles was charged with being found on the licensed premises of the Elbow Hotel, at Lumsden, after hours. Sergeant Packer stated that on the return journey of the Gore excursion to Queenstown Giles apparently felt thirsty and left the train at Lumsden to go across to the Elbow Hotel with the intention of getting liquor. The oar was closed and Giles did not get any liquor. Giles pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined 20/-, with costs 10/-. A BY-LAW CASE. T. S. Mackie, charged with driving a motor car along Main street, Gore, at a speed of more than 12 miles per hour, was convicted and fined 20/-, with costs 10/-. ALLEGED SPEEDING. Cyril N. Williamson, charged with driving a motor car along Mam street at a speed dangerous to the public, pleaded not guilty. Constable Miller in evidence stated that the defendant’s car travelled south along Main street at a speed of from 25 to 30 miles per hour. The time was about 7.30 p.m. and there was a certain amount of traffic about at the time. Defendant and Mr McLeod, who was a passenger in the car, stated that the speed at which the car travelled would not be more than 20 miles per hour. There was no traffic about at the time. The information was dismissed. MAINTENANCE. James Cumming, secretary of the Presbyterian Social Service Association, proceeded against John Alexander McNaughton for arrears on two maintenance orders in respect to two children, the arrears totalling £27, Mr Johnston, acting under instructions from Mr Dolamore, appeared for the association. The defendant, who did not appear, was convicted and sentenced to 14 days in Invercargill gaol, to be released on payment of the arrears together with £1 1/- solicitor’s fee on the first order, and he was similarly, dealt with in respect to the second, the sentences to be cumulative.
