BORSTAL ESCAPEES

THREE YOUNG MEN SENTENCED. ADVICE FROM THE BENCH. Three inmates of the Borstal Institution appeared for sentence before his Honour Mr Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday on charges of escaping from lawful custody. The prisoners were Leslie John Edyvean, Norman Lalor Walker and John Edward Phillips. It will be remembered that the escape took place on the evening of November 20, 1926, but the men were recaptured at Makarewa after a few hours liberty. None of the prisoners were represented by counsel and had nothing to say when questioned by the registrar. His Honour saicl that the prisoners had taken a very foolish step in running away from such an institution as the Borstal, from w’hich it was very difficult for inmates to regain their liberty successfully. They would be sentenced to the same terms as the ones that they had been serving when they broke away. Phillips was then sentenced to three rears’, reformative detention, Edyvean to ive years, and Walker to three years.

“You needn’t serve those terms if you lehave yourselves,” continued the Judge. ‘lf you settle down and do your duties [ou will be released after a comparatively (hort time by the Prisons Board and given i chance to earn an honest living.'*
