A Brisbane message records the death of Sir A. S. Cowley, ex-Minister of Lands and ex-Speaker, aged 78. Mr P. Gilfedder who was in Puketeraki attending a sitting of the Native Land Court returned by the express last evening. Mr J. H. Boyes, assistant Commissioner of Pensions, was a passenger by the express last evening. He is staying at the Club Hotel.

Colonel J. Sclater, general manager for Australia of the Canadian and Pacific Railway, arrived from the north on Wednesday night.

Mr W. Thomas, heedmastcr of the Timaru Boys’ High School, who has been in England, left towards the end of October for New Zealand.

Mr J. Hislop (Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs I arrived in Dunedin from the north on Thursday afternoon, and is staying * at the Grand Hotel. Dr. Stanley Brown , (President of the Southland Motor Association) and Mr J. R. Haigh left by motor car this morning for Oamaru where they will attend the quarterly meeting of the South Inland Motor Union. Judge Gilfedder, who will preside at the Native Land Court sitting next week, is expected to arrive to-day. Mr Oka Heketa, of Wellington, who will act as interpreter, is also expected to arrive by the mid-day express.

Dr Flett has been appointed jut’ :r assistant in the anatomy department of tlw Otago University for the year 1927, and Mr N. L. Edson has been appointed junior assistant in the department of physiology for the same period.

At a meeting of the council of the New Zealand Association of British Manufacturers and Agents, held on November 30, Mr G. H. Scott was re-elected president and Messrs C. W. Salmon and B. J. Dunsheath vicepresidents for the ensuing year. Mr A. W. Essex, travelling passenger agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway, arrived in Dunedin by the express from the north on Wednesday night. Mr Essex, who has just arrived in New Zealand from Montreal, will be stationed at Auckland.

Dr C. Everard North left Dunedin by the express on Wednesday morning, eii route for Napier, where he will join the Ruahine for the Home Country. Dr North will proceed to Edinburgh to *take a further medical degree, after which he will go to Shillong (Assam) to join the staff of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission Hospital there. Dr Charles and Mrs North and Miss Merrington accompanied Dr North as far as Wellington.
