MIDDLE SCHOOL
COMMITTEE MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Middle School Committee was held last Thursday: Present, Messrs J. J. Moore (chairman), T. Brown, G. Dempster, A. Anderson, A. C. Lyon and H. W. Kerr. Mr H. P. Campbell tendered his resignation from the committee. It was accepted with reflet. Mr J. Thompson was recommended to the board for appointment to fill the vacancy. A letter was received from Mr A. G. Froggatt, secretary of .the Central Methodist Sunday School, thanking the committee for the use of the school until the building of their new school was completed. A letter was received from the Education Board setting forth the condition on which the use of Stobo Hall had been granted as an infant school? In reply to a letter from the committee regarding cast of water per annum, the Sydenham School Committee replied as follows to the questions submitted: (1) How many pupils-attend your school? (about 1000) ; (2) How much per 1000 gallons do you pay (1/- per 1000 gallons) ; (3) What is about the average per year? (about £3 per half year of which we only pay onethird; the Technical Department and Education Board pay the other two thirds). From the Albany Street School Committee, Dunedin, the following reply was received:—Up to the present the water rate has been paid by the board, but under the proposed new scheme the school committees will have to pay from now on and the new rate will be in the vicinity of £25 per annum including sanitary. It was decided to write to the Education Board on this matter also to the other town schools asking their assistance in this matter. It was decided that Messrs J. J. Moore and D. Stalker attend the Schools’ Association Sports on November 3 and all members were requested to be present if possible. The janitor’s report was received and the requirements of the school left in the committee’s hands to attend to. The chairman’s action was endorsed for the purchasing of a copying machine for school use. The headmaster reported the school roll was 772, attendance 687. The work of the school is progressing satisfactorily. The laying of the foundation stones function passed off very successfully and we trust the infant school will be available for use when we after the summer vacation. It was decided to request the board to supply a wall blackboard for room H. The following committee were appointed to represent the Middle School on the Southland School Committees’ Association: —Messrs J. J. Moore, G. Dempster and D. Stalker. Messrs Boyce and Dempster were appointed a visiting committee for November.
