ANGLING

(By

“Creel”)

Changeable climatic conditions prevailed for last week-end, consequently the fish were decidedly patchy in their feeding periods. From the upper waters of the Oreti some “limit” bags were obtained on Sunday. Messrs J. W. Smith and A. L. Walker being among the participants. Mr Gerald Crawford (Balclutha) was delighted -with a nice even bag of 17 well-mended fish. Red Waipahi was found to be the most effective fly. At Centre Bush,. Mr A. E. Cutt caught about a dozen nice trout on the floating worm lure. On the Makarewa. Mr Eric Keast landed three heavy fish on the artificial minnow. The Southland Anglers’ Club roving competition resulted in a very fair weigh in of “speckled beauties,” and considering the adverse conditions, the competing anglers are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. Following are the final re-

Messrs R. Ure and D. Wishart were subject to a handicap of 10 per cent., but R. Ure’s bag was then 161bs llozs, which placed him in second position. Mr T. Copeland had the heaviest fish, 51bs, thereby winning this prize. Mr A. L. Whelham won the novice prize. Mr Aitken’s bag was taken from the Waiau River. • The first competition for the season under the auspices of the Gore Angling dub was held on the Waipahi during the weekend with some 16 contestants. The stream was in excellent order, but conditions generally mitigated against successful fishing, so that the baskets returned were very disappointing. Few fish were moving in the stream, while those that were doing so in the still water could see too well for the angler.

The competition resulted as follows: James Tinnock, B|lbs 1 G. Young, sMbs 2 W. McKenzie, heaviest fish, 21bs 12ozs. A juvenile competition held on the Mataura on Labour Day resulted as follows :

V. Graham, 3lbs 4ozs 1 J. Worsfold, 21bs 12ozs 2 W. Graham secured the prize for the heaviest fish with 2jlbs. J. Worsfokl secured the special prize for largest number of fish. There were seven entries.

The Mataura Angling dub held its first competition for the season during last weekend. The competitions commenced on Saturday at noon and continued until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Good entries were received for the open competition, in which eight anglers took part, and seven weighed in. The novice event drew two entries, and one competitor weighed in. The Mataura River was the popular stream, and it was in good order, while the Mimihau was in fair order, but rather full. The Dark Jessie and Red Quill Knat were the best lures on the Mataura. while the No. 4 Jessie was best on the Mimihau. The fish were not taking well

on Labour Day, and most of the bags were obtained previous to that. Mr H. Wilcox was successful in the open competition with 37 nice fish, weighing 281 b lOozs. A good perfirmance was put up by Master Ronnie Calder, who won the novice competition with 32 fish, weighing 31bs 2ozs. He secured the limit one day and he would have a fair chance in the open competition. The weigh-in took place in Mr IL Sleeman’s premises in the presence of a large number of members and non-members, the fish being received by the judge, Mr M, Maley, and his assistant, Mr J. Quilter. The total catch amounted to 180 fish, weighing 16libs lOozs, and when laid out they made a fine spectacle. The fish were distributed amoogst the non-fishing members of the dub, and 60 parcels were distributed. The result of the competition is as follows:
